Tarnished Promises

The pre-election promise of a government leader is too often tarnished by the leader’s allegiance to party and campaign contributor.

How to lead in Washington seems crystal clear to me. Although campaign contributions and party allow a candidate to run for office, it is the people’s vote that puts a candidate into office. The people cast their votes based on a candidate’s platform, what the candidate promises to try and accomplish during a term in office. Once elected, it is a no-brainer to follow the plan that made a candidate into a government leader, if the government leader intends to keep the job.

According to a CNN poll, a majority of Americans disapprove of the behavior of their elected government leaders during the debt ceiling fiasco. The poll puts disapproval at 86% and approval at 14%. I wonder if our government leaders will sit up and take notice. Probably not. It seems they follow the whims of party and deep-pocketed campaign contributors, forgetting that it is the people’s vote that elected them and the people’s vote that will put them back into or out of office.

The best we can hope for is that the people, you and I, will not forget these tarnished promises.
